Mississippi Casino Move Considered

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: "State budget writers expressed more interest in the possibility of coast casinos moving inland than they did about the Mississippi Gaming Commission's budget proposal for fiscal year 2006.

"'We meet just once a year with the committee, and it's a perfect time for members to learn about issues facing gaming,' Larry Gregory, executive director of the commission, said after Wednesday's meeting with the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.

"The 12 casinos on the Mississippi Gulf Coast closed for about two days due to Hurricane Ivan. That's estimated to have cost the state about $385,000 a day in tax revenue and meant lost wages for many of the approximately 16,500 casino workers.

"Gregory told the committee that probably half the coast casinos would favor moving inland and half would be against it…"
