Mississippi Casino Courses Still Offered

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Clarion Ledger: "Hurricane Katrina wiped out the University of Southern Mississippi's campus in Long Beach and wrecked much of the state's casino industry, but educators say that hasn't derailed their plans to offer gaming management courses this semester.

"USM and other state universities won the right to teach gaming management courses this summer when a judge overruled a state law that disallowed it. Hinds County Chancery Judge Patricia Wise said in response to a lawsuit filed by the state College Board that members have the authority to allow schools to teach the classes.

"The rush by several universities to offer gaming-related courses was on. In addition to USM, which had planned the courses before the ruling, Alcorn State University, Delta State University and Mississippi Valley State University also have expressed an interest in offering the classes.

"Officials from those schools, too, say Katrina hasn't changed a thing.

"…At USM, classes on the Coast are set to resume Oct. 10, including the gaming classes scheduled before Katrina. Although the school's Long Beach campus was destroyed by the hurricane, classes will be offered in an old hospital the school owns…"
