Mississippi board can call for tribal casino vote2 February 2007JACKSON COUNTY, Mississippi – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "The Jackson County Board of Supervisors has the legal authority to call a non-binding referendum to gauge whether residents would support a tribal-owned casino. "Another Mississippi county has done it, and an official opinion of the Attorney General's office gives counties that right. "Clergy in Jackson County asked two supervisors on Wednesday about holding a referendum during this year's state elections instead of during the 2008 Presidential election. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has asked for the 2008 date, but gambling opponents want the issue decided sooner. Some supervisors expressed uncertainty about their authority to hold such an election.
