Mississippi Bill Dies Without Vote

JACKSON, Mississippi -- As reported by the Biloxi Sun-Herald: "A bill to increase the tax on gamblers' winnings at Mississippi casinos died without a vote in the House on Wednesday after its supporters failed to scrape up enough guaranteed votes to pass it.

"Opponents feared the bill, which would raise the state tax on casino winnings from 3 percent to 5 percent, would scare high rollers away from Mississippi casinos.

"They said the state's casinos already are at a disadvantage because other gambling states allow gamblers to deduct their losses before paying taxes on winnings.

"The Mississippi Legislature changed the law a few years ago to eliminate the deductions…"
