Mississippi bill clears casino construction tax

JACKSON, Mississippi – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "A bill passed by a House committee Monday seeks to make clear that casinos will still be charged only 3.5 percent on construction materials, the same as other projects, now that some of them are moving onshore.

"House Gaming Committee Chairman Bobby Moak, D-Bogue Chitto, said he believes the law currently would allow casinos to pay only the 3.5 percent 'contractor's tax' instead of the 7 percent sales tax on building materials. But he said there were rumblings that wording in the law passed in 2005 to allow Coast casinos on land would allow them to be taxed at 7 percent. Casinos on floating barges have been paying the 3.5 percent tax on construction materials…"
