Missippissi governor doesn't support expansion11 May 2007BILOXI, Mississippi -- As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "Gov. Haley Barbour welcomed the Southern Gaming Summit back to the Coast Coliseum on Thursday and said he doesn't support expanding gambling beyond the seven counties that now have casinos. "Though he didn't speak directly about the proposed Choctaw casino in Jackson County, Barbour said all the counties that want gaming have already approved it. "'After 15 years I think it's time to close the window,' he said, and believes gambling should be kept to its current seven counties in the state, including Harrison and Hancock counties. Without Barbour's signature, the tribal casino can't open in Jackson County. "...In Tunica, gambling is fueling economic development, said Webster Franklin, president of the Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau, with the money and infrastructure that came with gambling now going to be used to diversify the city's economy..." |
