Minnesota Tribe Offers Casino Profit Sharing

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – As reported by the Associated Press: "In an overture that could alter the gambling debate in Minnesota, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe offered Thursday to hold formal discussions with government leaders about sharing casino profits, perhaps putting some toward new sports stadiums.

"Mille Lacs Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin made the offer of new talks in a letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty and legislative leaders.

"'Because of the growing political pressure to expand gaming and the seeming stalemate between the tribes and the state, now is the time for a new course,' Benjamin wrote.

"…Among her possible discussion points:

"Seeking a business relationship with the Twins or Vikings in which the tribe could help pay for construction of a new stadium or two.

"Forge new compacts with the state allowing the tribe to have more games and simulcast horse racing at the Grand Casino Hinckley and Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

"Provide legal support to the state if it would challenge the federal government's prohibition of sports betting, which some have said could be taxed if regulated…"
