Minnesota Lottery Chops Jobs, Offices

MINNESOTA – As reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "The Minnesota State Lottery shed 15 more jobs and closed two offices Wednesday in a move intended to save $1 million beginning in July.

"Interim lottery director Mike Vekich said the restructuring was a response to a legislative auditor's report released in February. The report suggested looking at personnel and office space, and Vekich said Wednesday's move will make 'the lottery more efficient and effective.'

"The offices in Brainerd and Eagan will close, he said. The three Brainerd employees will be laid off, and two Eagan employees will lose their jobs in June, he said. Nine workers in Roseville also received layoff notices, and the office of retiring assistant director Mary Ellen Hennen will go dark, he said.

"…Wednesday's layoffs are in addition to 34 employees Andersen let go in October when he was under pressure from a report by an environmental group and by Gov. Tim Pawlenty's office to cut costs. The environmental group's research discovered the Minnesota lottery was one of the most expensive when compared with others of similar size…"
