Minnesota Governor Hold Onto Hope

MINNESOTA – As reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "Gov. Tim Pawlenty said Tuesday he was disappointed that one of three Indian tribes he's been negotiating with on a state-tribal casino proposal rejected any casino partnership with the owners of Canterbury Park racetrack.

"But he said he was not giving up on the possibility the state and the remaining two tribes would strike a deal with Canterbury.

"On Monday, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe said it wanted no part of combining a casino plan that Pawlenty and leaders of the three tribes crafted with a rival casino proposal that Canterbury owners have been pushing since 1997.

"The remaining two tribes -- the Red Lake Chippewa and the White Earth Band of Ojibwe -- have not made clear whether they would participate in a casino that involved Canterbury.

"…He predicted the House would pass some type of casino legislation, keeping the issue alive for end-of-session negotiations between the House and Senate…"
