Minnesota Governor Hints at Gambling Expansion17 March 2004MINNESOTA – As reported by the (Minnesota) Star Tribune: "Gov. Tim Pawlenty appeared to open the door to an expansion of gambling on Tuesday, saying that if he does not see progress soon on an increased contribution to the state from Indian gambling, 'we will consider all other -- most other -- gaming options.' "Previously, Pawlenty has said he opposed any expansion of gambling and preferred to see the tribes retain their monopoly on casino gambling by voluntarily contributing money to the state. "But on Tuesday, Pawlenty said that if the tribes 'are unwilling or unable' to part with any of their casino profits, he would not negotiate indefinitely. "…That appears to signal at least a tacit consideration of what is being called a racino -- a proposal to put video slot machines at the Canterbury Park racetrack in Shakopee, a plan that has considerable support from Republican legislators. "…The state's Indian tribes have maintained exclusive rights to casino gambling for 15 years. The state receives only a $150,000 annual payment from the casinos to defray regulatory costs…" |
