Millions Raised in Nebraska Casino Battle

5 August 2004

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- As reported by the Associated Press: "A group rallying against expanded gambling in Nebraska is attracting big-name contributors, including billionaire investor Warren Buffett and Congressman Tom Osborne.

"Now that the petitions to put expanded gambling before Nebraska voters have been turned in, so are the tallies of how much it is costing both sides to campaign for or against the issue.

"The industry coalition supporting expanded gambling, Keep the Money in Nebraska, reports it has so far raised $1.26 million. Leaders say $1.09 million of that went toward the petition process.

"And while the opposition group Gambling with the Good Life has only raised $79,000 since early June, Buffett is now on board, a promising sign to the group's leaders.

"...Two gambling measures are expected to be on the ballot in Nebraska this November. One passed by the Legislature this spring would allow two casinos anywhere in the state.
