Middleborough casino vote criticized9 August 2007MIDDLEBOROUGH, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Boston Globe: "Selectmen plan to forward information to Secretary of State William Galvin and Attorney General Martha Coakley this week that, they say, challenges the credibility of complaints about the July 28 casino vote. "The suggestion to contact the state agencies scrutinizing the historic Town Meeting vote was made on Monday by Selectman Adam Bond, who helped negotiate the multimillion-dollar casino deal between the town and the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. Town Meeting approved the deal by a 2-to-1 margin. "Bond said he wants state officials to see the way that anti-casino forces solicited what he considers after-the-fact, anonymous reports from voters about alleged improprieties in the voting procedure. "...At particular issue is an e-mail -- written last Wednesday by James Reynolds, a director of the anti-casino group Casinofacts.org. -- in which he appears to offer anonymity to people sending in complaints about the voting. That e-mail was widely circulated among casino opponents. "...Selectmen had received 10 letters from voters questioning the Town Meeting that were included in their packets for Monday's board meeting. While Selectman Wayne Perkins read a number of letters on other matters publicly that night, he did not mention any of the Town Meeting complaints..." |
