Middleboro officials invite tribe for casino talks

MIDDLEBORO, Massachusetts – As reported by the South of Boston Enterprise: "Selectmen might be playing a long-shot asking the Wampanoags to bring a casino here and the town holds all the cards as it is flush with land and good roadways, but residents' concerns about traffic and the town's character could trump the whole deal.

"On Monday night, the board voted to invite the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to bring gaming to town. While officials tipped their hand, residents were taken by surprise.

"…Town Manager John F. Healey told selectmen that large tracks of open space that could accommodate a casino included Southpointe Business Park on Route 44, which was permitted but never built.

"The site of a defunct drive-in, the property is under agreement by Gary Darman, principal owner of Oak Point. Last week, Darman said he was not considering a casino for the site and wanted to develop it as a shopping center…"
