Middleboro, neighbors at odds29 January 2008MIDDLEBORO, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Middleboro Enterprise: "In the town's host agreement for a casino with the Mashpee Wampanoags, the town must actively help the tribe, and this concerns some local officials who last week again denied Middleboro a seat on the Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts. "I voted no. The big reason, they're sworn in the compact to do everything they can to help the Indians achieve their goal, a casino in Middleboro,' said Plympton Selectman Joseph A. Freitas. "As part of its agreement with the tribe, the town of Middleboro agreed to assist the tribe in obtaining regulatory approvals and getting necessary legislation passed. The agreement also obligates Middleboro officials to assist the tribe in responding to any negative comments about the proposal. "The town has made several requests to join the regional task force, which was established by 17 local communities last summer to study the impact of a casino in Middleboro. All were denied. "Strains between Middleboro and the regional task force peaked in October, when the task force denied permission for Middleboro Town Planner Ruth McCawley Geoffroy to address the group.
