Middleboro looks for casino advice

MIDDLEBORO, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Cape Cod Times: "The town is being pressed to negotiate a casino development agreement with the Mashpee Wampanoag, and members of the town's casino gambling fact finding committee are listening to anyone and everyone who has advice.

"At its first meeting last night, the study panel brought in Clyde Barrow, the director of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis, who reiterated his opposition to the tribe's recent offer to pay the town $7 million a year in lieu of taxes to build a five-star resort casino in Middleboro.

"Barrow focused on a proposed agreement between the Narragansett tribe in Rhode Island and the town of West Warwick, which would have paid that community more than double what the Mashpee Wampanoag are offering, he said.

"Part of that agreement would have prohibited the Narragansett tribe from putting land into trust with the federal government, which meant the land would not have been considered sovereign and the tribe would have been required to pay property taxes.

"...Roughly 30 people attended last night's meeting as compared to more than 500 who turned out for Wednesday's selectmen meeting. However, there are strong feelings on the tribe's plans in Middleboro no matter how small the gathering..."
