Michigan Tribes to Announce Casino Plans

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "Four Indian tribes are expected to announce Monday that they will seek government approval to build and operate a full-service casino in Romulus near Detroit Metropolitan Airport, people familiar with the proposal said.

"But economic development and casino experts say the process for winning approval for an off-reservation Indian casino could take years and may never happen.

"

"A statement scheduled to be released Monday and posted on the Sault Tribe Times Web site says the four tribes, which all operate casinos now, will take advantage of an intertribal agreement signed in 1994 with then-Gov. John Engler that allows some or all of Michigan's seven tribes to share ownership and profits from an off-reservation casino.

"…The tribes are the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and two small Upper Peninsula tribes: the Hannahville-Potawatomi Indian Community and the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians…"
