Michigan tribe plans casino for this year

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Lansing State Journal: "The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi may be taking a gamble in doing so, but officials said this week the tribe is looking to break ground this year on the proposed FireKeepers Casino in Emmett Township.

"Donna Halinski, spokeswoman for the tribe, said while the primary focus is on the casino's design, she is cautiously optimistic the tribe will break ground later this year at I-94 and 11-Mile Road, and the doors could open in late 2008.

"…The federal government on Dec. 12 took into trust the 79 acres of land in Emmett Township set aside for the casino, which means the tribe has the land, and the casino appears to be one court appeal away from opening its doors. This is the first land in trust for the tribe since 1835.

"…Halinski said while the casino's future may still be in limbo, the tribe's main focus is on the design work of the $150 million, 136,000-square-foot casino…"
