Michigan Tribe Hopeful About Casino Plans

BARAGA, Michigan – As reported by the Daily Mining Gazette: "Keweenaw Bay Indian Community President/CEO Susan LaFernier says she is hopeful that the often-stalled tribal casino project in Negaunee Township can get off the ground.

"…The new casino has been in the planning stage for nearly a decade. When it is built, the motel-casino-theatre complex would replace the existing facility in Harvey and reportedly provide approximately 350 jobs.

"LaFernier said that sometimes it has been hard to see the light at the end tunnel as far as the project is concerned.

"…The KBIC formally asked the Department of Interior in March for permission to move the casino in Chocolay Township to the proposed site at the former Marquette County Airport. Department of Interior Secretary Gale Norton's approval is required for the move…"
