Michigan tribal casino location picked

STANDISH, Michigan – As reported by the Bay City Times: "The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe will build a new casino on land it owns in Arenac County, about 30 miles north of Bay City, a tribal official confirmed Tuesday.

"The tribe currently owns and operates the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant.

"…But Cloutier, the tribe's chief spokesman, said in a telephone interview with The Times that the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Council announced the new casino plans to its membership at a tribal meeting Saturday. Cloutier suggested that building plans could begin any day, but stopped short of giving a specific date.

"The project will break ground on tribal trust lands occupied by the tribe's 56-member Saganing branch, about four miles southeast of Standish, he said. It is the only trust land held by the Saginaw Chippewas outside of Isabella County.

"Standish-area residents, meanwhile, were voicing generally positive feelings about the casino and what it might mean for rural Arenac County. Many reacted to the news in disbelief because they've heard rumors of Standish casino plans for a decade or longer…"
