Michigan tracks aim for 2008 slot vote12 February 2007MICHIGAN – As reported by the Michigan Daily Tribune: "A coalition is forming to back a 2008 statewide ballot allowing slot machines at the state's six race tracks. "…Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson on Friday called slots restricted to the state's six race tracks a 'no brainer' and the best of his five alternatives to raise money for Cobo Hall expansion in Detroit or for the state. "…Patterson believes Detroit and Indian casino interests will 'gang up' and fight the proposal as they did in 2004 when they spent more than $20 million to get statewide Proposal 1 adopted. Proposal 1 requires any new gambling -- except at Indian and Detroit casinos -- to be approved in statewide votes and in the community where it would operate. "Patterson said an initiative could be placed on the ballot by the state legislature or by the collection of petition signatures…" |
