Michigan smoking ban being debated19 March 2009LANSING, Michigan -- As reported by the Detroit Free-Press: "It was snuffed out in the Legislature last year, but a campaign to ban smoking in Michigan restaurants, bars and other public places was revived Wednesday. "State Rep. Bert Johnson, D-Detroit, took testimony in his House Regulatory Committee and said he hopes to put a bill before the full House by April 1. "Some House faces are new, but the issues they face remain the same: Should a smoking ban apply to all public places, or should Detroit's casinos and so-called cigar bars be exempt? "...Smoking opponents say it's needed because secondhand smoke kills up to 3,000 Michiganders a year and smoke is a nuisance. Some restaurant owners and the casino owners say a ban will hurt business. Thirty-five states have some sort of ban on indoor smoking in public places..." |
