Michigan Senate Won't Deal with Slots

5 November 2004

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Lansing State Journal: "The state Senate won't deal with term limits, slot machines at horse tracks or tax restructuring during the Legislature's 'lame duck' session, Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema said Thursday.

"Sikkema added that the Senate has plenty of less glamorous subjects it wants to tackle before it wraps up business for the two-year session early next month.

"The Wyoming Republican also criticized Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, during a meeting with reporters, saying she is moving toward increased spending without saying how she'll pay for higher pay for state employees or other increases.

"…Sikkema said the Senate would not take up the issue of allowing slot machines at horse tracks, legislation that now is stalled in a joint House-Senate conference committee.

"Sikkema said Michigan voters decided that issue when they passed Proposal 1 on Tuesday.

"Proposal 1 requires that casino-style gaming be approved by voters at both the state and local levels."
