Michigan Senate Approves Casino Tax Hike7 July 2004CHICAGO, Illinois – As reported by Reuters: "The Michigan Senate on Tuesday passed a new version of a bill to hike taxes on Detroit casinos that would increase the tax rate to 24 percent from the current 18 percent. "The bill passed the Republican-controlled chamber in a 29-7 vote, according to Bill Nowling, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema. The measure passed by one vote as a super-majority vote was needed to amend a voter-approved law. "Legislation passed by the Republican-controlled House in May would double the tax rate to 36 percent to raise about $180 million a year for the state…" |
