Michigan Riverboat Casino to Expand22 October 2004MICHIGAN CITY, Michigan -- As reported by the South Bend Tribune: "Ground has been broken on a new ship that will substantially increase the size of Blue Chip Casino, one of five riverboats along Indiana's Lake Michigan shoreline. "The driving force behind the $150 million investment is not so much to increase the number of games, although some will be added. "Primarily, it's to accommodate a need expressed by patrons for a more spacious environment and a desire by the gaming company to board more customers, said Rob Stillwell, vice president of Corporate Communications for Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming, the owner of Blue Chip Casino. "...Last week, construction of a new, 85,000-square-foot vessel began directly in front of the existing boat that sits in a man-made channel along U.S. 12 on Michigan City's far north side. "The new three-level boat will be just 20 feet longer, but wider by 120 feet, providing more elbow room to what now can be tight quarters, especially when attendance nears 2,000, said Judy Campbell, executive vice-president/general manager of Blue Chip Casino. "...Another incentive for the expansion is to improve Blue Chip's ability to compete against a land-based casino that could go up just 10 miles away in New Buffalo..." |
