Michigan Regulators Order Casino Funding Returned

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "In an unusual move, state campaign finance regulators have ordered Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's re-election committee to return $45,200 in donations from 14 people linked to casino operations or buildings.

"It's the first time that the Michigan Secretary of State's Office, which regulates campaign finance matters, has been asked by the Michigan Gaming Control Board to direct a campaign committee to refund donations because of casino conflicts, Kelly Chesney, a Secretary of State spokeswoman, said Tuesday.

"The Gaming Control Board regulates Detroit's three casinos. State law limits political contributions by people connected with the casinos.

"…William Phillips, a lawyer for the Kilpatrick re-election committee, said in an e-mail to the Free Press that the campaign had no way of knowing whether a contributor was connected to a casino unless the contributor listed a casino as his or her employer…"
