Michigan Legislators Negotiate Casino Tax

"The state House approved a bill that would double the wagering tax on the MotorCity, MGM Grand and Greektown casinos in Detroit from 18 percent to 36 percent. The Senate voted last week to raise it by one-third to 24 percent.

"Lawmakers are expected to vote this week on a compromise bill that would raise the tax by an amount between the Senate's 24 percent and the House's 36 percent.

"The House plan would generate an additional $220 million, which would help resolve a projected $1 billion deficit in the budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. The Senate version would bring the state an additional $50 million..."
