Michigan group files to appeal casino decision

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – As reported by the Grands Rapid Press: "A notice of appeal was filed Thursday in what might be the last hope for a group trying to stop a Wayland Township casino.

"The appeal by Michigan Gambling Opposition is expected to ask the appellate court in Washington, D.C., to set aside a lower court's decision in February in favor of the U.S. Department of Interior and the Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians.

"…That U.S. District Court decision almost cleared the way for land in Wayland Township to be taken into trust for the tribe, setting up a reservation where the Gun Lake Band plans to open a casino.

"But District Court Judge John Penn, after making his ruling, agreed to issue a stay that prevented the land from going into trust until an appeal could be heard…"
