Michigan Gambling Proposal Passes3 November 2004MICHIGAN – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "Backed by an infusion of a $20-million ad campaign, Proposal 1, the ballot initiative to limit casino expansion, passed easily. "The controversial proposal, opposed in a vigorous campaign featuring Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and top GOP officials, calls for voters to approve any new form of legalized gambling in Michigan, including video lottery and slot machines. The only exempt establishments would be casinos operated by the Indian tribes and the three Detroit casinos -- MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity and Greektown. "…'It appears this is a very significant victory for all Michigan voters,' said Roger Martin, of the Vote Yes on Proposal 1 campaign. 'From this day forward, no matter where you live, if the state wants to put casino-style games or Internet gambling in your community, you'll have a vote.' "…Proposal 1 supporters, heavily supported by the Detroit and Indian tribe casinos, had ads trying to convince voters the proposal didn't threaten the lottery or school funding." |
