Michigan Gambling Issues to be Debated

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Associated Press: "Republican legislative leaders and Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm will take another stab this week at balancing the state budget.

"…While the Legislature isn't expected to sign off on bills to increase the liquor tax and continue the estate tax as requested by Granholm, they may be able to work out a deal to resolve a projected $1 billion budget deficit without those increases.

"…Another part of this week's budget negotiations will be the ongoing debate over how much to increase the tax on Detroit's three casinos and whether to allow horse tracks across the state to have slot machines and other electronic gaming devices.

"Although Republican supporters of both bills insist the two are not connected, it's unlikely one will move without agreement on the other.

"…State Rep. Larry Julian, R-Lennon, is working closely on both bills. He introduced the bill to expand gambling options at horse racetracks and proposed the amendment to increase the tax on the Detroit casinos to a related bill…"
