Michigan court rules against casino foes

MICHIGAN -- As reported by the South Bend Tribune: "Michigan's Indian tribes, including the Dowagiac-based Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, had reason to be happy Thursday after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled against an anti-casino group's attempt to invalidate the state's gaming compacts with the tribes.

"The court's 5-2 decision appeared to eliminate the final legal hurdle to the Pokagon Band's Four Winds Casino Resort near New Buffalo. Ground was broken a year ago on the $400 million development, and an August opening is anticipated.

"...Earlier, TOMAC also lost a battle in federal court over the casino. Its lawsuits, however, succeeded in delaying for five years the start of the casino's construction..."
