Michigan City Touts Gaming Plans

ROMULUS, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit News: "In the campaign to bring casino gambling and horse racing to Romulus, city officials are telling voters their support could mean millions of dollars that could be used to improve city services and thousands of new jobs in the suburb of 23,000 residents.

"Voters on Tuesday will say whether they want to permit such gambling in Romulus. Their approval would start the process, which would include state approval for horse racing and federal approval for the casino, since it is being proposed by an Indian tribe.

"The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians wants to build a $350 million casino with a conference center and hotel resort, 2,500 slot machines and more than 90 table games.

"Separately, the Ontario-based Magna Entertainment, Corp. bought land for a $125 million thoroughbred racetrack in Romulus, known mostly as home to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

"…Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert said he is optimistic that the measure will pass. The word is getting around town, with lawn signs in favor of casinos…"
