Michigan casino study released

MICHIGAN -- As reported by the Morning Sun: "A new study led by a Central Michigan University professor shows that outstate Michigan casinos have an impact beyond the counties where the casinos are located.

"'The counties that seem to have seen the most dramatic increase are not the host counties,' said Dr. James P. Hill, director of CMU's Honors Program and the leader of the study. Counties that border on the casino counties also see an impact, but often don't reap much benefit.

"...Casino gaming has produced positive results for the Tribes that own casinos, but the impact of those casinos goes far beyond the reservations.

"The researchers found that the economic growth benefits of casino gambling are not uniform. Some types of businesses, such as hotels and motels, appear to be significantly more impacted than others.

"...He said the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort had produced more of a positive economic impact on Isabella County than many other casinos had had on their host counties..."
