Michigan Casino Plans in Limbo

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Battle Creek Enquirer: "The proposed FireKeepers casino still is in legal limbo while a ruling from a federal district court judge is awaited.

"Federal Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson of U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia heard arguments by lawyers representing the U.S. Department of the Interior and local casino opposition group Citizens Exposing Truth About Casinos in August, but has not ruled on the case.

"Another lawsuit brought by a different anti-casino group questioning the legality of four gaming compacts signed by then-Gov. John Engler in 1998 also will be heard by the Michigan Supreme Court on March 11.

"The compact covering the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi's planned casino in Emmett Township is included in that suit.

"CETAC filed the lawsuit against the Department of the Interior in August 2002 after the department found the casino would cause no significant impact on the land for which it was being planned.

"…Full House Resorts and RAM Entertainment -- a pair of Las Vegas-based gaming investment operations -- equally financed a $3,858,830 purchase of 79 acres of land in September and are planning to turn the land over to the tribe, pending the completion of the federal lawsuit…"
