Michigan Casino Plans in Jeopardy

MICHIGAN – As reported by the WOOD 8 TV: "A dramatic reversal took place in Lansing on Wednesday, a vote that puts all those highly touted plans for a casino in Allegan County in real jeopardy.

"The Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians has been trying for years to open a casino in Allegan County. The vote on Wednesday will be a setback at the very least.

"…Two years ago, the Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians got the compact which was approved by the House and Senate. But then-Governor John Engler decided not to sign it as he was leaving office, and left the decision up to Governor Jennifer Granholm.

"The compact has been on Granholm's desk for two years and hasn't done anything with it. So on Wednesday, the Senate revoked its endorsement of that plan with a vote of 24-11.

" 'I'm not going to wait for the governor to act, on whether it's on this issue or any other issue,' Senator Ken Sikkema, R-Wyoming, told 24 Hour News 8. 'I believe the expansion of Native American casinos is bad for Michigan, as has been pointed out about this particular casino.'

"…The Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians released a statement, saying, 'Senator Sikkema should be ashamed of himself for discounting the support our tribe has received...Our fight for fairness is far from over and we will prevail.'…"
