Michigan casino plan faces hearing

MICHIGAN -- As reported by the Port Huron Times Herald: "The effort to bring a tribal casino to Port Huron faces yet another hurdle Friday when the issue goes before the House Judiciary Committee.

"It's certain to be a hostile venue.

"...The committee's chairman, Rep. John Conyers, D-Detroit, is an unabashed opponent of proposed casinos in Port Huron and Romulus. A witness list had not been announced as of Monday afternoon, but casino supporters expect Conyers to use the hearing as a forum to assail the projects.

"...A month ago, the Natural Resources Committee sent a pair of land-swap bills to the House floor. Those bills - H.R. 2176 and H.R. 4115 - would pave the way for casinos in Port Huron and Romulus.

"MGM Mirage, which owns an $800 million casino-hotel in Detroit, and the Saginaw Chippewa, which operates Michigan's most profitable casino at Mount Pleasant, have spent millions of dollars in efforts to block the legislation..."
