Michigan Casino Battle Heads Towards Resolution24 August 2005MICHIGAN – As reported by the Battle Creek Enquirer: "A seven-year battle over a proposed casino in Emmett Township may once again be on the road to resolution. "A public hearing, scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Burnham Brook, 200 W. Michigan Ave., kicks off a 45-day comment period on the environmental impact study of an Indian-run casino planned for 79 acres near 11-Mile Road and I-94. "Herb Nelson, environmental scientist with the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, said the public comment period is meant to be constructive. "…Dave Moore, president of local casino opposition group Citizens Exposing Truth About Casinos, said the group plans to submit written comments and concerns to the BIA, but would not say if any of the group's representatives would be making comments at the hearing. "…The study looks into several aspects of the transportation network and traffic safety in the area of the proposed casino and surrounding areas, and takes into account current and estimated future traffic volumes. "Social issues addressed in the study include alcohol consumption, public services, employment and income, socio-economics and property uses and impacts. "Laura Spurr, tribal chairwoman of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi, said she is not surprised by what she has read of the environmental study…" |
