Michigan $125 Million Complex Proposed15 March 2004DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "A group of Detroit developers is proposing construction of a $125-million racetrack and gaming entertainment complex that could be operating by the fall of 2005 at the historic Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit. "Detroit Thoroughbred Raceway Inc., headed by developer Andrew McLemore Jr. and other investors, submitted the proposal on Friday, which calls for a full-scale Thoroughbred racing complex, up to 500 video lottery slot machines, and a 164-room hotel with a restaurant and convention center, the Detroit News reports. Included in the plan are a number of structural renovations at the fairgrounds, where Seabiscuit won the Governor's Handicap in 1936. "…The construction of the new entertainment complex at the fairgrounds would create 1,900 jobs and hundreds of temporary construction jobs, according to the plan, and secure a future for the continuation of the Michigan State Fair. The plan also estimates $23.5-million would be generated in annual tax revenues for the city and state…" |
