Miami voters gets ready for slot vote29 January 2008FLORIDA -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "The Seminole Tribe began operating upgraded Las Vegas-style slot machines Monday, even as Miami-Dade voters prepared to decide whether to create more competition for the tribe's enormous Hard Rock casino near Hollywood. "Miami-Dade voters will cast ballots today on whether to allow slots at Flagler Dog Track, Calder Race Course and Miami Jai-Alai. "The new 'Class III' slot machines put the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino -- at Stirling Road and U.S. 441 on the tribe's Hollywood reservation -- on a par with the four racinos that have opened since Broward voters approved them in 2005. "...The tribe has wanted the Vegas-style machines for decades but especially since Broward's four racinos got them. "...The tribe signed a compact with Gov. Charlie Crist in November, allowing the new machines. Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio and Senate President Ken Pruitt have challenged the legality of the compact in court. "The state Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments about whether the compact is valid on Wednesday. "The compact also allows the tribe to introduce blackjack and other table games..." |
