Mexico's Bishops Criticize Plan to Legalize Gambling

MEXICO – As reported by the Associated Press: "Mexico's Roman Catholic bishops took out a newspaper advertisement on Friday criticizing a plan to legalize casino gambling in the country.

"The full-page advertisement placed by the Mexican Episcopal Conference said studies had shown 'the trickery of the 'gaming' industry and also its negative repercussions on the lives of many people and families.'

"…Mexico's Congress is studying a measure that would legalize casino gambling. The bishops said that it is likely to be approved.

"…The bishops complained that gambling undermines the dignity and value of work and promoted direct private and government charity and development projects rather than using gambling for development…"
