Memorial Planned for Sept. 11 Heroes15 August 2002LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: “Thousands of firefighters marched down the Las Vegas Strip in 113-degree temperatures on Wednesday to the New York-New York hotel casino where plans for a permanent memorial to the heroes of Sept. 11 were announced. “More T-shirts were added to the thousands sent from fire departments all over the world that line the fence in front of the faux Statue of Liberty that is part of the hotel-casino's facade. Visitors began leaving items outside the New York-themed hotel shortly after the terrorist attacks as a tribute to those who died. “…The permanent memorial at the base of the Statue of Liberty replica will preserve the thousands of personal articles that have been left at the impromptu shrine, said Felix Rappaport, New York-New York president and chief operating officers. “…`In response to the overwhelming outpouring of emotion by so many visitors, we are committed to respectfully preserving these articles and honoring the spirit in which they were offered.’ “…Members of the International Association of Firefighters union, meeting for a weeklong convention here, joined executives from MGM Mirage Inc., the owner of New York-New York, on a stage with the New York Fire Department's Emerald Society Bagpipe and Drum Band for the announcement. “…Construction of the permanent tribute is scheduled to begin in October and be completed by late December. The granite-based structure will have shadow boxes encasing some of the artifacts and items left by visitors…” |
