Measure Proposed to Strengthen Nevada Neighborhood Casino Law30 March 2001CARSON CITY, Nevada –March 30, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press:”Stricter limits are needed on proposed casino projects in Nevada's residential areas to preserve the integrity of neighborhoods, a lawmaker told a state Senate panel Thursday. ”…Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas] introduced SB171, which would require the support of the local elected official representing the area in which the casino project would be built before it could be approved for development by a city council or county commission. ”Current state law requires a three-fourths vote of such a governing body to authorize the construction of a neighborhood casino. In addition to the provision giving the council member or county commissioner representing the proposed casino area veto power, Rawson's bill also makes it clear that the vote must be three-fourths of all members of the local government panel - not just those present. ”…Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, said she was in support of doing what was needed to preserve neighborhoods facing commercial intrusion. ”…Rawson's bill also would increase the distances required between homes, schools and churches and proposed neighborhood casinos. ”A casino would have to be 1,500 feet from a developed residential district instead of the current 500 feet; and 2,500 feet from the property line of a school or church instead of the current 1,500 feet…” |
