McGreevey Chummy with Casinos at Conference

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "For one afternoon news conference, Gov. James E. McGreevey was a friend of the gaming industry again.

"McGreevey, who centered his budget message this summer on making greedy casino bosses pay their fair share, worked his way Sunday afternoon down a line of executives from the city's largest gaming company, Park Place Entertainment Corp.

"In town to announce the resumption of plans for an 11-story, midtown parking garage, Mc-Greevey shook each casino executive's hand, then walked across the vacant parking lot toward a podium set up for the event.

"State Sen. Bill Gormley, R-Atlantic, embroiled in a bitter feud with the Democratic governor for months now, positioned himself away from the crowd and waited for McGreevey with an ironic smile, as if to stir up the drama for the news cameras.

"…McGreevey slapped Gormley on the arm. Gormley returned the gesture by throwing his arm around the governor's shoulder.

"…The garage, a $75 million project, will provide parking for The Walk, a $60 million retail and entertainment complex, as well as Bally's Atlantic City, The Wild West Casino, Caesars Atlantic City and the future Pier at Caesars, an $80 million retail.

"…As for McGreevey and Gormley, they are a long way from returning to political allies. After the news conference, McGreevey headed to the Margate home of Gormley opponent Tom Swift for a fund-raiser…"
