McCain: Federal Tribal Casino Moratorium Unlikely

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Grand Rapids Press: "Sen. John McCain said a federal moratorium on Indian gaming requested by a West Michigan business leader at a hearing in May is unlikely.

"The Arizona Republican, who is chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, said a proposed tribal casino in Wayland Township likely is too far along for Congress to have an impact on its development.

"…Former Perrigo Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Michael Jandernoa requested the moratorium May 18 in testimony before McCain's committee in Washington.

"…The inability for casino opponents like those in Grand Rapids to have an impact on casino location decisions shows some of what's wrong with federal Indian gaming laws, McCain said.

"…McCain's committee has been holding hearings about Indian gaming laws and alleged corruption among tribes, lobbyists and others tied to the $19 billion industry…"
