Mayor: Ontario Should Lift Casino Referendum Ban

CALLANDER, Ontario – As reported by the North Bay Nugget: "The province should lift the moratorium on casino referendums so the issue can be settled locally by the community, Mayor Bill Brazeau said Tuesday.

"Brazeau made the comment after Ted Abraham told council he's pitching a 'joint application' with all area municipalities for a gaming facility at his Lookout Inn and Terrace Suite development.

"Abraham said the province will likely make up its mind about locations for the latest round of charitable casinos within months, and that a united approach has a better chance of succeeding.

"… While he's had 'several' conversations with Nipissing First Nation Chief Phil Goulais, Abraham said he wants to make a presentation to the chief and council soon.

"…The ban on casino referendums was extended for one year by former premier Ernie Eves, which makes any official movement impossible until the next municipal election in 2 1/2 years, Abraham said…"
