Mayor Mulls Over Slot Resort

ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Morning Call: "Still undecided on Aztar Corp.'s plans to build the Lehigh Valley Tropicana slots resort in Allentown, Mayor Ed Pawlowski is feeling the pressure.

"An exhausted Pawlowski returned Saturday afternoon from a one-day visit to Aztar's Evansville, Ind., riverboat casino resort with lots of good things to say about the company's record there.

"Still, he said he harbors doubts about what is best for Allentown, and even the Lehigh Valley.

"With two Valley cities competing to host a slots casino, and Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan already supporting a Bethlehem slots proposal, Pawlowski figures his decision could help give Bethlehem or Allentown an edge.

"…Callahan has been a strong supporter of Sands Bethworks Gaming's proposal to build a massive $879 million slots casino resort, retail, hotel and entertainment complex on the ruins of Bethlehem Steel.

"There's no guarantee a slots license will go to either Allentown or Bethlehem, but the Valley is widely regarded as a strong contender…"
