Mayor: Bethlehem ready for casino22 February 2008BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania -- As reported by the New Jersey Express-Times: "| Mayor John Callahan on Thursday declared the growing city is safe, getting safer and ready for the casino and the 5 million annual visitors it is projected to draw. "Focusing on economic development and public safety, Callahan gave his fifth annual state of the city address to a packed conference room at the Comfort Suites on South Side. About 190 people attended, according to Lynn Logue from the event's organizer, the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. "'We can't attract millions of visitors to Bethlehem if they don't feel safe,' he continued. "...Traffic generated by the projected Sands BethWorks Gaming LLC casino slated to open next year breaks down to 13,700 visitors a day and will pose the development's biggest challenge, [Police Commissioner Randall] Miller said. "...At an estimated $800 million, the casino is part of $1.8 billion in development recently completed, ongoing or planned, Callahan said..." |
