Massachusetts tribes may face off21 November 2007HYANNIS, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Cape Cod Times: "The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) wants to build a commercial casino in Southeastern Massachusetts, a move that would pit them directly against the state's only other federally recognized tribe. "The Aquinnah, in partnership with the Seneca Nation of New York, has viewed about 35 sites across the state, with 60 percent of them in Southeastern Massachusetts. "...During a meeting with the Times editorial board yesterday, the tribe made its strongest comments yet about a preference to both bid on one of three commercial licenses proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick and to locate that casino as close to Martha's Vineyard as possible. "...The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has purchased more than 300 acres in Middleboro and reached an agreement with town officials for a $1 billion resort casino. "While the Mashpee tribe has said it is strongly leaning toward an Indian casino under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, Seneca and Aquinnah leaders yesterday said that route is too costly and time-consuming..." |
