Massachusetts Tribe Hit with Feud14 April 2004MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "A Central Massachusetts tribe with hopes of winning federal recognition this spring and possibly opening a giant casino is facing a rebellion in its ranks. "A Nipmuc tribal member who claims to be a long-time chief announced yesterday that he and several supporters are pulling their names from a petition for tribal status now being reviewed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. "The move by Peter Silva, who also goes by the name Chief Silver Arrow, comes as the Sutton-based Nipmuc Nation prepares for a May 1 decision by the BIA. "…Silva claims Nipmuc Nation leaders are improperly using the tribe's small Grafton reservation for their plan to win recognition, which requires a tribal land base. But Silva claims he controls the land as a long-time tribal leader…" |
