Massachusetts tribe gets casino counteroffer

MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the South Coast Today: "Three weeks after the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe presented a draft agreement to the town of Middleboro to host a casino, a counteroffer is on the table.

"The town's attorney said yesterday he planned to send a more detailed version of a proposal to tribal leaders last night. Though press reports this week have said the town is seeking $250 million for infrastructure improvements and up to 2 percent of casino profits, attorney Dennis Whittlesey said yesterday those numbers are already out of date.

"...The tribe has been offering the town $7 million a year and $150 million in new infrastructure to host a casino. The town's new proposal seeks a far greater amount by instead getting a percentage of slot machine revenue.

"...The tribe has bought 125 acres in Middleboro and holds an option on another 200 acres. It is also in talks with a landowner for an adjacent 200 acres.

"Even so, the tribe continues to flirt with New Bedford as a possible alternative location..."
