Massachusetts Town Considers Casino

ADAMS, Massachusetts – As reported by the Berkshire Eagle: "More than 20 years after they last considered the issue, town meeting members will have a chance to once again weigh in on whether casino gambling should come to the Berkshires.

"The gambling article is one of four that will be put to a vote at the June 22 town meeting. The Selectmen closed the town meeting warrant at their meeting on Wednesday night.

"…The gambling article reads: 'Shall the town vote to allow casino gambling within its town limits and, further, to allow the people of the town the opportunity to voice their opinion on the issue of casino gambling by placing the aforementioned question on the ballot of the next town-wide election?'

"…There are currently efforts afoot in the state Legislature to bring gambling to the state. Supporters say that a plan last year to allow three casinos and slot machines at racetracks would have provided an additional $500 million in revenue for the state. They say that as it currently stands, Massachusetts gamblers simply drive to Connecticut, where Indian-run casinos are allowed…"
